Hello everyone, welcome back to another entry and I hope you are all have a pretty damn god day.

Today we are going to look at who I think should win an Oscar, this is not who the critics have picked but who I would like to win.

Without further ado, lets get down to business. We will leave the four big ones till last… something to look forward to 😉

Best Documentary Short

Black Sheep (Ed Perkins and Jonathan Chinn) End Game (Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman) Lifeboat (Skye Fitzgerald and Bryn Mooser) A Night at the Garden (Marshall Curry) Period. End of Sentence.(Rayka Zehtabchi and Melissa Berton)

I really like End Game, well maybe liked isn’t the correct term to use. It broke my heart more than once and is such a beautiful documentary that is very well shot and done with finesse around a subject that is close to the bone. I implore you all to watch it, you might think you cannot get through the whole thing but you absolutely must. Afterwards you will take a few minutes to really think about things. I hope this gets the recognition it deserves and takes the Academy Award.

Best Documentary Feature

Free Solo (Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin, Evan Hayes and Shannon Dill) Hale County This Morning, This Evening (RaMell Ross, Joslyn Barnes and Su Kim) Minding the Gap (Bing Liu and Diane Quon) Of Fathers and Sons (Talal Derki, Ansgar Frerich, Eva Kemme and Tobias N. Siebert) RBG (Betsy West and Julie Cohen)

Minding the Gap documentary, I watched purely for the sake of this post, I needed to know what I was going to be choosing of course and my original pick was Free Solo. Watching a documentary about guys in a skatepark wasn’t exactly screaming Oscar worthy… how wrong I was. A wonder, intelligent and focused documentary that is spread across 12 years of three friend’s life. How they grow and leave the childhood behind and enter adulthood, it really is an interesting watch to see how much they change and in some ways don’t. Have a watch, its worth it.

Best Live-Action Short

Detainment (Vincent Lambe and Darren Maho) Fauve (Jeremy Comte and Maria Gracia Turgeon) Marguerite (Marianne Farley and Marie-Helene Panisset) Mother (Rodrigo Sorogoyen and María del Puy Alvarado) Skin (Guy Nattiv and Jaime Ray Newman)

Detainment is a true story about two young boys aged 10 that carry out the horrific murder of 2-year-old Jamie Bulger. I was a young boy when this happened and It is something I remember like it was yesterday. It was very sad and disturbing to watch it all come to life onscreen in front of me. The two young actors portrayed their characters very well I must admit. Knowing the event very well, the journey made me feel very uneasy as you knew exactly what was going to happened. My heart will always go out to the Bulger family and I have to pick this for my choice to win the Academy Award.

Best Animated Short

Animal Behaviour (Alison Snowden and David Fine) Bao (Domee Shi and Becky Neiman-Cobb) Late Afternoon (Louise Bagnall and Nuria González Blanco) One Small Step (Andrew Chesworth and Bobby Pontillas) Weekends (Trevor Jimenez)

Bao is my pick all day long. I really had fun watching this, only 7 minutes long but I would of happily watched a feature length version. It had a strong message behind it too with the fantasy and magic of Disney incorporated in. We shouldn’t ever take our mothers for granted, we should certainly never make them feel abandoned. I cannot hide the fact that the lil dumpling was cute as hell too. So yes, have a little watch of this, its not long and I think the message is clear.

Best Animated Feature

Incredibles 2 (Brad Bird, John Walker and Nicole Paradis Grindle) Isle of Dogs (Wes Anderson, Scott Rudin, Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson) Mirai (Mamoru Hosoda and Yuichiro Saito) Ralph Breaks the Internet (Rich Moore, Phil Johnston and Clark Spencer) Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller)

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is by far one of the best animated movies I have seen for a very, very long time. If you are going to bring a comic-book character to live in the form of animation, this is how it should be done. It felt like you were watching the pages become reality right in front of your eyes. That’s pretty much all I have to say, oh and if you haven’t already for some unknown reason… GO WATCH IT!

Best Foreign-Language Film

Capernaum (Lebanon) Cold War (Poland) Never Look Away (Germany) Roma (Mexico) Shoplifters (Japan)

Best foreign-language film and best picture Oscar this year for Roma? It could well be. A beautiful movie you need to watch if you haven’t already. Even if you don’t get on foreign-language-films, I think you will enjoy this one. It is a pretty slow film to start with but you still fully engage with it and listen to every word that is said. Taking aim at class struggles, what childhood life is like for some, Roma tackles all with class and tact that you cant help but have a little think afterwards about what you just watched.

Best Film Editing

BlacKkKlansman (Barry Alexander Brown)

Bohemian Rhapsody (John Ottman)

The Favourite (Yorgos Mavropsaridis)

Green Book (Patrick J. Don Vito)

Vice (Hank Corwin)

Bohemian Rhapsody for me please, that live aid scene… it gave me chills. I really enjoyed the feel and look of the movie as a whole, seamless jumps and the perfect background visuals not over shadowing the main performance , it ticked all my boxes. John Ottman did a fantastic job and he deserves it in my book. Although I think Vice is in with a very good chance of winning, well they all are, I may be going with my heart more than my head because as a huge Queen fan it is a biased opinion I admit.

Best Visual Effects

Avengers: Infinity War (Dan DeLeeuw, Kelly Port, Russell Earl and Dan Sudick) Christopher Robin (Christopher Lawrence, Michael Eames, Theo Jones and Chris Corbould) First Man (Paul Lambert, Ian Hunter, Tristan Myles and J.D. Schwalm) Ready Player One (Roger Guyett, Grady Cofer, Matthew E. Butler and David Shirk) Solo: A Star Wars Story (Rob Bredow, Patrick Tubach, Neal Scanlan and Dominic Tuohy)

It has to be Avengers: Infinity War, the fight scenes, the CGI, the battle scenes and the buildings and weapons… it was a visual masterpiece. I loved the movie and was blown away by the effects, it was no surprise of course considering the previous Avengers and Marvel movies. They always deliver in the visual aspect of things. My pick for sure.

Best Production Design

Black Panther (Hannah Beachler and Jay Hart) The Favourite (Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton) First Man (Nathan Crowley and Kathy Lucas) Mary Poppins Returns (John Myhre and Gordon Sim) Roma (Eugenio Caballero and Barbara Enriquez)

Two marvel hits in a row… Black Panther’s country Wakanda was a feast for the eyes. It was insane and made the movie so much better. The fight scene on the waterfall, the production design around that area alone was fantastic. The buildings and walk ways were exciting to see every time they popped up on screen. Black Panther for me thanks.

Best Sound Editing

Black Panther (Benjamin A. Burtt and Steve Boeddeker) Bohemian Rhapsody (John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone) First Man (Ai-Ling Lee and Mildred Iatrou Morgan) A Quiet Place (Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl) Roma (Sergio Diaz and Skip Lievsay)

I would love to say Bohemian Rhapsody again here but I have to admit… A Quiet Place wins this for me. Filmed mostly in an eerie silence, it was an epic. Nothing sure of brilliant, the way they fully immersed you into the movie through the sound editing was a pleasure to be able to witness for myself. If you watched this in the cinema you really did have an experience (you also found out who was a loud eater). I really hope that A Quiet Place takes this one.

Best Sound Mixing

Black Panther (Steve Boeddeker, Brandon Proctor and Peter Devlin) Bohemian Rhapsody (Paul Massey, Tim Cavagin and John Casali) First Man (Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montaño, Ai-Ling Lee and Mary H. Ellis) Roma (Skip Lievsay, Craig Henighan and Jose Antonio Garcia) A Star Is Born (Tom Ozanich, Dean Zupancic, Jason Ruder and Steve Morrow)

Yup you guessed it… Bohemian Rhapsody… Live Aid scene… nothing else left to say. Sorry A Star Is Born, you were just released in the wrong year.

.

Best Original Score

Black Panther (Ludwig Goransson) BlacKkKlansman (Terence Blanchard) If Beale Street Could Talk (Nicholas Britell) Isle of Dogs (Alexandre Desplat) Mary Poppins Returns (Marc Shaiman)

Blank Panther for me, I found myself acknowledging the score more in this movie than any of the others. So by that reason alone, it takes the Academy Award. Nothing more really to say regarding that other than… If Beale Street Could Talk was a very close second.

Best Original Song

"All the Stars" (Black Panther) Music by Mark Spears, Kendrick Lamar Duckworth and Anthony Tiffith Lyric by Kendrick Lamar Duckworth, Anthony Tiffith and Solana Rowe

"I'll Fight" (RBG) Music and Lyric by Diane Warren

"The Place Where Lost Things Go" (Mary Poppins Returns) Music by Marc Shaiman Lyric by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman

"Shallow" (A Star Is Born) Music and Lyric by Lady Gaga, Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt

"When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings" (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs) Music and Lyric by David Rawlings and Gillian Welch

Shallow wins this for me. It is an incredible song that you heard everywhere when it was released. Huge song and deserves the win. Performed very well by Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Side note, I also loved When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings, I do love a bit of country.

Best Cinematography

The Favourite (Robbie Ryan) Never Look Away (Caleb Deschanel) Roma (Alfonso Cuaron) A Star Is Born (Matty Libatique) Cold War (Lukasz Zal)

Have to choose it again… ROMA. Was a close call between that and Cold War but Roma was just a masterclass in cinematography, again I implore you to watch this movie.

Best Costume Design

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Mary Zophres) Black Panther (Ruth E. Carter) The Favourite (Sandy Powell) Mary Poppins Returns (Sandy Powell) Mary Queen of Scots (Alexandra Byrne)

Black Panther had some epic costume designs and it has to win. The favourite is well… The Favourite, just because period costume design tends to have a knack of winning these things. In an ideal world it would be an excellent time for everyone if Black Panther too away the Oscar and I hope it does.

Best Makeup & Hairstyling

Border (Goran Lundstrom and Pamela Goldammer) Mary Queen of Scots (Jenny Shircore, Marc Pilcher and Jessica Brooks) Vice (Greg Cannom, Kate Biscoe and Patricia DeHaney)

Vice all day long, I mean jut look at Christian Bale in this movie, unrecognizable. They did an ace job of turning him into Dick Cheney

Best Adapted Screenplay

A Star Is Born (Eric Roth, Will Fetters & Bradley Cooper) The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (Joel Coen & Ethan Coen) BlacKkKlansman (Charlie Wachtel & David Rabinowitz and Kevin Willmott & Spike Lee) If Beale Street Could Talk (Barry Jenkins) Can You Ever Forgive Me? (Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty)

I really enjoyed BlacKkKlansman and If Beale Street Could Talk… Well I enjoyed all of them but those two were the standouts for me. I have to go for If Beale Street Could Talk, it just left me a bit emotional afterwards and I cannot ignore that. It is always a sign of a great movie when I come away feeling something I didn’t intend on feeling.

Best Original Screenplay

The Favourite (Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara) First Reformed (Paul Schrader) Green Book (Nick Vallelonga & Brian Hayes Currie & Peter Farrelly) Roma (Alfonso Cuaron) Vice (Adam McKay)

Green Book, no need to explain why other than it is my favourite movie. Love it, loved the writing, loved the acting, love the movie… yea, I loved it. Go watch it yea? If you don’t… well I cant do anything about it BUT you will be missing out.

Best Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali (Green Book) Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman) Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born) Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) Sam Rockwell (Vice)

Bet you cant guess who I’m choosing? Ok, I will stop the suspense… MAHERSHALA ALI. This guy man, this guy is awesome in every bloody role he takes. I can not tell you how much I enjoy his performances. I smell another Oscar for him and I will be so happy for the guy.

Best Supporting Actress

Amy Adams (Vice) Marina de Tavira (Roma) Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) Emma Stone (The Favourite) Rachel Weisz (The Favourite)

Regina King, she did so amazingly well in If Beale Street Could Talk. I loved the way she came across, especially with how much she loved her daughter and family. She was graceful and made me believe every word she said. Huge fan of her performance. She deserves it.

Best Actor

Christian Bale (Vice)

Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born)

Willem Dafoe (At Eternity's Gate)

Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody)

Viggo Mortensen (Green Book)

No one is tipping Viggo Mortensen which I think is silly, he was awesome as Tony Lip. But I cant ignore this guy and I have to go with Bradley Cooper, sorry Rami, you were awesome too. Bradley Coopers character was just a tragic story that really got me. He played it so well and deserves some recognition for it. I know he’s unlikely to win but it’s my list so I’m saying you’ve won here Brad.

Best Actress

Yalitza Aparicio (Roma) Glenn Close (The Wife) Olivia Colman (The Favourite) Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)

Olivia Colman, I wish, pray, hope and have everything crossed that you win. You were a treat in ‘The Favourite’. The Oscar shouldn’t even be up for discussion, they should just give you a little bell and say here you go, take it. She was… is awesome! Go see what I mean by having a little watch of her performance.

Best Director

Alfonso Cuaron (Roma) Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman) Adam McKay (Vice) Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War)

Congratulations Algonso Cuaron… I cant even pick anybody else, you did an magnificent job. Fully deserved.

Best Picture

Black Panther (Kevin Feige, Producer) BlacKkKlansman (Sean McKittrick, Jason Blum, Raymond Mansfield, Jordan Peele and Spike Lee, Producers) Bohemian Rhapsody (Graham King, Producer) The Favourite (Ceci Dempsey, Ed Guiney, Lee Magiday and Yorgos Lanthimos, Producers) Roma (Gabriela Rodriguez and Alfonso Cuaron, Producers) Green Book (Jim Burke, Charles B. Wessler, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly and Nick Vallelonga, Producers) A Star Is Born (Bill Gerber, Bradley Cooper and Lynette Howell Taylor, Producers) Vice (Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Adam McKay and Kevin Messick, Producers)

Green Book… OBVIOUSLY!!!

That was my list of who I think deserve to win an Oscar. Hope you enjoyed it.
